138-161AD. Roman. Antoninus Pius, contemporary copy of a dupondius. Length 24.8mm, Width 22.5mm, Thickness 2.6mm, Diameter 24.8mm, Weight 7.4g. Obverse: Radiate head right. Inscription: ANTONINVS AVG ... Reverse: Female figure, possibly Aequitas/Moneta holding scales and cornucopiae. Inscription: ...S C. Moneta is recorded on a dupondius of Antoninus Pius struck in AD 150-1 (RIC III, p. 136, no. 878); there is a smilar copy, from different dies, in the Bath assemblage with this reverse - Bath p. 323 / pl. XLI, no. 30.
Die axis: 180 deg. or 6 o'clock. Worn with partially legible legend on the obverse but illegible on the reverse other than 'S C'. Attractive green patina but some surface corrosion. Several contemporary copies of Antoninus Pius dupondius found in the Bath spring - Bath plates XL-XLI, c.f. nos. 23-27, 29-32. This is one of an increasing number being recorded by the PAS - e.g. WAW-8E3F15.
