A medieval lead seal matrix of pointed oval shape, 13th to 14th century in date. The central device is an incised fleur de lis set within an incised oval border. A legend runs around the central device, starting from the central point of the fleur de lis. The seal matrix is quite worn so not all of the legend is readable, but SIGILL . IONE . ???SEL . can be read, which translates as 'The Seal of John...'). The attachment lug on the reverse is damaged and flattened, and is located in the same place as the top of the fleur de lis on the front. The matrix has a perforation in the centre, though this is more likely to be damage rather than deliberate. The seal matrix measures 33.1 mm long, 27.8 mm wide, 3.59 mm thick and weighs 14.4 grams. It has a pale cream to grey patina.
