An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative rear hook bow brooch. It is missing most of one wing, spring, pin and foot due to old breaks. The surviving wing is semi-cylindrical in form with moulded decoration on the front face consisting of two broad grooves containing double vertical lines, separated from one another by a vertical flute. At the centre of the wings is an incomplete rear-facing hook. The bow itself is cylindrical in form, tapering towards an old break. It is slightly faceted in appearance, with a central rib that extends from the rear hook and has fluting to either side. The brooch measures 25.41mm in length, 24.65mm in width at wings, 6.02mm in thickness at bow, and weighs 11.38g.
This is a Roman Colchester derivative rear hook brooch similar to examples published by Hattatt (1989: for example no. 1390). It is of 1st century date, c.43-70 AD.
