A Post Medieval copper alloy single sharp-hooked clasp, AD 1500-1650. The clasp belongs to Read's (2008, 87) Class E, as it has been cast with an integral attachment-loop in the same plane as the plate. Within Class E it then falls into Type 3, as the plate is circular. The clasp has been cast with a D-shaped section, having a moulded upper surface and a flat back. The circular plate has been decorated with a six-petalled rose contained within a raised border. The centre of the rose has been replaced with a decorative pierced hole, which itself is defined by a raised border. From one side of the central plate projects a roughly square-shaped attachment loop with a square-shaped aperture. The interior edge of the loop is slightly bevelled. Around the attachment loop an S-shaped link has been linked on and remains in situ. At the opposite point on the outer edge of the circular plate, a D-shape sectioned projection tapers to a sharp point and has been folded downwards and back towards the plate to form a hook. The reverse of the plate is undecorated and in good condition. The entire clasp has a dark red-brown patina.
Dimensions: length: 29.05mm; width: 13.04mm; thickness: 1.18mm; weight: 1.77g.
Notes:
Notes: Read (2008, 87) notes that although archaeological evidence suggests that the use of Class E single sharp-hooked clasps continued in use from the beginning of the Post Medieval period until the first quarter of the 17th century, all the examples recovered by Thames Mudlarks are from secure 1500-1550 deposits.
