Medieval silver crockard penny, continental imitation of sterling type issued by John of Louvain, Lord of Herstal(1285-1309), minted at Herstal, c.1298-1300 AD, Mayhew type 84.
Notes:
Mayhew comments that this is the last substantive type of John or Louvain and very base, only about 50% silver.
Continental imitation sterlings were imported in large numbers in the 1290s, possibly in part as a response to shortage of coin in England. As they were debased and light weight they usually traded at less than a penny in value. At Christmas 1299 a royal writ decreed they should trade at a halfpenny and at Easter 1300 it was decreed they all had to be brought to the mint for re-coinage at actual silver value. Stray finds are therefore likely to have been lost before this date.
