This is an interesting lead, possibly medieval spindle whorl. In date, it may be from the Roman times to the late medieval. The central boss is bi-conical and decorated with straight ridged lines to each surface. It then has an unusual feature of an attached outer rope decorated ring. The ring is attached to the core of the body by four lugs or stays. It is a deliberate design feature, perhaps to extend the mass with a smaller amount of lead? See CPAT-39D310 for a similar object. The object is now a whitish grey with lead corrosion.
