A late Saxon, cast copper alloy stirrup strap mount, dating from c. 1000-1100AD. The body of the mount is rectangular with an extension that narrows to a rounded apex at the upper fixing point. There are three small, paired protrusions on each side of the mount; one pair immediately below the upper fixing point, one pair at the shoulder of the rectangle and a final pair just above the base of the mount. There is an incised groove running around the inside of the rim of the mount and a design within this consisting of a pattern of incised lines radiating from a central, transverse rectangle. This design can be interpreted as two beasts in profile, flanking a grid like pattern. There are the remains of two iron fixing rivets; one at the apex of the extension and one, which penetrates the face of the mount, at the bottom left hand side. The reverse of the mount shows traces of ferrous material that suggest a third rivet in the bottom right. This is an example of a Williams' Class A, Type 1 stirrup strap mount. It is 44mm long, 27.8mm wide and 3.9mm thick. It weighs 12.1gm. See Finds Research Group, Datasheet 20, p. 3 Fig. 5.
