A cast, copper alloy Late Iron Age or Roman Colchester brooch dating from 25 - 60 AD. The bow of the brooch is oval in section, tapering to a point just below the catch plate, which has broken off and is missing. At the head of the bow are two short wings, each with three shallow, transverse grooves. The end of one of the wings has broken away and is missing. The wings are very thin. Above the wings is a short spur of metal, rectangular in section and tapering to a point. This is integral with the bow of the brooch and was the chord hook, which once bent forwards to lie on the head, but is now distorted and bent backwards. Beneath this, below the underside of the wings is a cast loop of metal, also integral to the bow of the brooch. This would have been the loop to hold the spring and pin which are missing. The brooch has a red brown patina. It is 37.2mm long, 13.8mm wide and 22.9mm thick. It weighs 7.2gm. See Hattatt's Visual Catalogue, page 297, number 1455.
