An incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, flat wing ends type, Western Group), cf. Mackreth 2011, 5.b4. Plate 50 . it is missing its spring mechanism and lower bow and catchplate. It measures 28.60mm in incomplete length and weighs 7.8g.
The wingspan is 28.68mm. The side lugs are circular and broken across the c.1.5mm diameter piercing. The reverse of the wings are hollowed, to give a C-sectioned profile. To the front, a pair of transverse ribs flanks each open end and a single rib flanks the bow. Between is a group of three ribs.
The bow is 8.92mm wide where it extends from the top of the wings. It has a moulding on either side as it curves downwards and a prominent central rib. This appears to create a triangular cross-section at the (very worn) break, which measures 3.01x3.05mm. At the very top of the bow is a forward facing lug, which is rather more a pierced projection, for the chord. The piercing has broken/ worn through and measures 2.16mm in diameter.
