UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: HESH-8D8126

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An unidentified lead alloy artefact of probable medieval or post medieval date. This artefact is either the remnants of a composite pommel from a sword / dagger or a variant style of weight. From the shape and weight of the iron bar (which is similar to those seen on whittle tanged knives) and the uniform nature of the lead alloy element I would prefer the former.

The artefact is composite consisting of a lead alloy flattened sphere through which passes an iron square sectioned bar. The lead alloy element is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section. The upper and lower faces have clear oval shaped flattened areas and although the sides curve, they are uniform. There are no decorative elements present. The iron bar is flush with the upper edge of the artefact and extends through it- projecting from the base. The iron bar is heavily corroded and is laminating.

The lead alloy element measures 33.1mm length, 33.1mm width is 24.8mm thick. The projecting iron bar is 55.6mm length, 9.4mm wide and 8.0mm thick. The combined elements weigh 177.77 grams.
