A copper alloy strap end dating from the Early Medieval period. It is a classic and unusually luxurious 9th century Thomas's Class A type 1. It terminates in a zoomorphic head at the closed end; the eyes of which are green glass or stones and with triangular ears that are lined with niello. There are Trewhiddle style beasts hidden on the main part of the body, also picked out in niello. The border is beaded and there is a palmette at the open end. Two iron rivets are rusted in place. It has a length of 49.67mm, width 13.25mm, thickness 2.06mm, weight 7.75g. See FRG Datasheet 32.
