HOOKED TAG

Unique ID: SF7251

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Hooked tag made from copper alloy. The plate is rectangular, and has tiny stubs at the top from a missing attachment loop. There is a border of large pellets; down either long side are four pellets, there are none at the top because of the attachment loop, and there is a single pellet in the centre of the bottom of the plate above the hook. Within the border of pellets is a relief rectangle with a single pellet in the centre. The hook has some moulded transverse decoration at the top (perhaps a broad groove above a ridge). The hook curves down and behind, and is complete but now slightly bent to one side. The object has a black patina on its lower surfaces which has rubbed off the higher areas; this may have been a 'black-lacquer' coating, characteristic of the period, which is at present thought to possibly be the result of applying a hot linseed oil coating.
