AXEHEAD

Unique ID: SF7262

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Bifacially worked flint axehead with blade end missing. Gravel flint, mainly black but mottled with a little grey and white, particularly on one face. It is difficult to tell whether this is the nature of the flint, or whether it is due to partial patination. Small gravelly inclusion at butt. Some flakes have been removed from the break, which may be the result of re-use or of more recent damage. The asymmetric cross-section, with one face gently convex and the other more markedly peaked, together with surviving transverse flake removal near the blade end, suggest a tranchet axe of Mesolithic date. Surviving length 87 mm, width 43 mm, thickness 24 mm.
