FINGER RING

Unique ID: SF7453

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Half of an oval bezel from a finger-ring. It has a bevelled edge around the central setting, which is shallow and now empty. The reverse curves to fit around the finger across the short axis, and there is no trace of the hoop on the short end. The bezel must therefore have been set transversely to the hoop, with the hoop emerging from the centre of the long sides rather than from one end. It looks very Roman; although on Roman rings the bezel is usually set longitudinally to the hoop, I would rather see it as an unusual Roman bezel than one from a later ring.
