Low-flanged palstave axe with side loop. Found with part of haft intact (now removed and sent to the BM for analysis) -wood survived within area bound by flanges. Some of the wooden haft remain on one side only, and below, in line with the stop and angled into the middle of the axe isa circular 3mm diam. hole. Axe is plain, except for curious 'ridge'/ mid-rib slightly off-centre on one side of the blade only. Uniform criss-cross lines possibly could be remains of twining. Axe is pitted and heavily corroded, especially around stop ridge area. White residue at butt end result of being wrapped in silver foil to protect wood for C14 analysis. ?Type Carleton.
