BUCKLE

Unique ID: SF10663

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A copper-alloy buckle plate, rectangular in shape measuring 24mm in length by 21mm in width. It has four rivet holes, one near to each corner, one has a rivet surviving in it which is attached to a piece of copper-alloy sheet which is incomplete but appears to have run behind the back face of the buckle plate. The front face is decorated with an open work design, consisting of a left facing winged, two-legged beast with a dragon-like head and a fish-like tail, the wings and tail are decorated with boarder grooves and very small circular indentations, perhaps to indicate scales or feathers. The beast has been defined by circular perforations around its edges. The back face, half of which is visible beneath the sheet of copper-alloy, is undecorated. A similar beast on a buckle plate has been found in London although without the open work design and in Kings Lynn with the open work design, the latter example has been dated to the early 13th century (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 113-114, Fig 73, No 530).
