Unique ID: SF10695

Object type certainty: Possibly
Workflow status: Published Find published

Lead mount? in the form of a human head. The back is flat as cast with no indication of an attachment method. The relief head is almost triangular in outline, with a distinct chin forming a rounded point. The hair is indicated by two horizontal braids; the circular eyes project over 1mm though one is damaged. The nose is a bar running from the forehead and expanding slightly at the base above a very sllight indication of a mouth (mostly a horizontal groove which might be damage. Length 27mm, width 19mm. The function and date of such a simple object is difficult to establish, but it seems possible that these lead heads might be from vessels or boxes, comparable to the figures on the handles of bronze flagons, and most likely Roman in date.
