Cast copper-alloy pendant. Bell-shaped, splaying out at base with trace of ring for attachment; now broken. In the centre is a stylized human face with heavy curving eyebrows, large round eyes and a triangular nose. There is evidence for rounded cheeks and possibly a mouth, although the object is heavily corroded. On the lower edge and as far as the eyebrows on one side , there is a border of circular stamps. It is likely that this decoration is duplicated on the other side, but is not now visible. L: 30.5 W: 15-32 T: 0.5-1 (very heavily cleaned, much of surface patina missing).
Two similar items (but copper-alloy brooches rather than pendants) were found in grave 136 at Lechlade, Oxfordshire (Boyle et al. 1998, pp. 111 and 237, fig. 5.84; 1-2). Bell-shaped pendants of much higher quality are known, and an example can be seen on the PAS database at SUR-6FBE75. They are thought to perhaps have had a role on horse harness.
