BOW BROOCH

Copper alloy brooch, Knickfibel type. Missing spring, pin and most of catchplate and forward hook; very corroded. The small wings have no surviving decoration. The bow is D-section, the upper half strongly arched and with a knob, probably very abraded, above the turn into a slightly tapering lower bow which ends in a point. Length 44mm, width 9mm. Type as Riha (1979, Augst) Typ 2.7, similar shape and condition to her no.225. This type, related to the Eye brooch, is Continental, particularly found on the Rhine and rare in Britain; date early-mid 1st C.
