An incomplete cast copper-alloy Late Iron Age to Early Roman bow brooch of Langton Down Type (AD 25-60). The lower part of the bow (including the catch-plate), the pin and spring mechanism and part of the wings are missing. The head of the bow projects forwards and then turns 90° to become almost vertical. The wings (or cover) are semi-cylindrical and would have been formed from a flat sheet and pressed together to form an abutting seam at the rear. At the front of the more intact wing there is a pair of decorative lateral grooves. This cover contained a separate copper-alloy spring, a fragment of which can be seen at each open end. The front of the bow is slightly convex and the rear is flat and plain. At the top, the width of the bow is 10.9mm. It tapers evenly to a width of 6.3mm at the old transverse break. The thickness of the bow, at the break, is 1.3mm. At the front, the bow has moulded decoration consisting of a central longitudinal rib flanked on either side by triple reeding. This brooch has a dark green patina with small patches of corrosion. 18.7 x 17.7mm. Weight: 2.90g.
