Roman copper alloy bow brooch probably of trumpet derivative type and 2nd century date The brooch is fragmentary and distorted, represented by the upper bow (with a length of 25.6mm and a weight of 2.5g). The brooch employed a spring mechanism, now missing. The spring was likely to have been secured within lateral lugs, which have also been lost (giving the wings a surviving 13.7mm). Above the head are the remnants of an integral chain loop. The top of the bow is flat (with a width of 9.8mm and a depth of 7.5mm). The bow has a hollow rear (U-shaped section, with a depth of 3.6mm and a thickness of 1.6mm) and straight sides converging towards the mid bow. The face is convex across its width and is decorated with a central column of opposing triangular cells, which held enamel, the remnants of which are now blue green. The bow has a horizontal groove before a button, possibly comprising three knops. The bow has broken across the button. Remnant mid brown surface patina survives in recessed areas and on the rear.
