Cast lead alloy human head. Oval in plan, D-sectioned (flat on the back). Realistically modelled head with curly hair coming down over the forehead to just above the eye-brows; the nose tip is flattened, narrow but full-lipped mouth, rounded chin. Slightly hollowed in the centre of the reverse. Silver-grey surface with some small patches of white ?limescale. Length 77.1mm, max width (just above temples) 43.7mm, max thickness (across forehead & nose) 24.5mm, weight 488.1g. This was found inside a drystone garden boundary wall attached to a 17th/18th century house. Larger carved stone heads set into house or boundary walls are not uncommon finds in the Peak District / Pennines (e.g. see John Billingsley's "A Stony Gaze" (1998 or 2001)). They are thought to be intended to ward of bad luck/witchcraft etc. The style of this head suggests it is 18th century.
