A silver shilling of William III: 1694-1702, third bust, issued 1696 OBV: Laureate bust left Inscr: GVLIELMVS.III.DEI.GRA REV: Four cruciform crowned shields of England, Scotland, France and Ireland surrounding central rose Inscr: BR.FRA.ET.HIB.REX.1690 Spink (2002), p.338, no.3505. Die axis: 6 Condition: F Diameter: 25.30mm, Thickness: 1.37mm, Weight: 5.9g These two coins are of sterling silver (92.5% fine metal) and were issued within the same year, part of William III's Great Recoinage. The shilling denomination was a reasonably valuable one, something like a £5 or £10 note in modern times. On balance, it is more likely that the two coins represent one loss, rather than two separate ones, especially if there are no other coins found in the general location. Thus, they would fulfil the criteria of Treasure according to the terms of the Act. Anna Booth Finds Liaison Officer, Somerset Barry Cook The British Museum
