HOOKED TAG

A triangular copper-alloy hooked tag of early-medieval date. The tag has been cut from a sheet, with the apex of the triangle recurved to form the hook, arguably now missing its tip. The flat object has been pierced twice with two circular, slightly unaligned attachment holes at the wider end. The attachment end is slightly cusped with removals towards the centre and the ends. There is a triple incision on the upper surface that follows the sides. The main field has been affected by corrosion and no further decoration is discernible. For triangular hooked tags in general see Biddle 1990 (550; fig. 148); for one with linear decoration dated to the 9th century see West (1998, 215; ref. 97.2). The object has a dark-green patina with areas of variable lighter corrosion product. Hooked tags such as this could date from the 7th to 11th centuries; a slightly more refined range is suggested based on Winchester and Ipswich finds in the volumes quoted above.
