A slightly corroded and damaged early-medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas Class B, Type 1. The attachment end is wedge-shaped and split (max. W.: 7.0mm), with a double perforation; both rivets have been lost. The lower sheet is missing, while the holes on the upper sheet are abraded, partially in one case and completely in the case of the other. This is partly because the terminal is thinned compared to the main body of the strap-end. The base of the plain attachment end is marked by a trio of transverse grooves, within which a pair of ridges. Beyond, the strap-end tapers very gradually before terminating in a small, basically moulded, animal-head terminal (W.: c. 3.35mm). Above the head is another trio of transverse grooves, with possible continuations on the otherwise plain lower surface. The zoomorphic terminal features curved removals to its edges which suggest eyes and a snout. The lower surface of the strap-end is flat; it has a semicircular cross-section. The object has an even, mid-green patina, with some areas of off-white corrosion, particularly on the lower surface. This type of strap-end is a common type in southern and south-eastern England and dates from c. 800 AD onwards (Thomas 2003, 4). For similar see Biddle (1990, 502; fig. 126, e.g. ref. 1071).
