TOKEN

Unique ID: SUSS-59D9A6

Object type certainty: Certain

Post Medieval cast lead alloy circular uni-faced token (1500-1850 AD). On one side are the raised initials , I and G. The token has a serrated edge and two central holes. The token measures 23.7mm in diameter, and weighs 5.98 grams. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely but those with initials are thought to be Post Medieval in date (1500-1850 AD). The serrated edge and central holes suggest that this token has been converted into use as a whirligig or buzz wheel. These were quite often made from fragments of other objects or scrap and although it is believed they have been around from late Medieval times this adaption probably relates to the 17th-18th century. For more information on whirligigs see Egan; Toys Trifles and Trinkets (2005) p387-391.
