A complete silver-gilt Medieval to post-Medieval finger-ring, 15th-early 16th century. Treasure: 2010 T70).

This ring has a rectangular bezel with the letters: IHC, the sacred monogram denoting the name of Jesus. The monogram, in an engraved cross-hatched field, is enclosed by a grooved border. Each cusped shoulder is decorated with eight engraved lines radiating from a central point at each end of the bezel. The outer face of the hoop is formed of eight contiguous lozenge-shaped elements, all containing a quatrefoil flower-like motif. The ring is slightly worn with some loss of the gilding. Diameter:
23.2mm; width: 8.4mm; thickness: 1.8mm; weight: 5.18g.
The black letter monogram and iconographic style of ring dates it to 15th/early 16th Century. There are numerous examples in the British Museum collection.
The find contains a minimum of 10% silver and predates 1710. It thus qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of precious metal content and age.

Discovery: Found by Mr Brian Hawkes while metal-detecting in February 2010.
