An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4.l, flat wing ends type). The remaining single wing is semi-cylindrical and has an incomplete wing cap. The axis bar, spring and pin are all missing. The wing is undecorated. The bowhead is hump-like in profile and is oval in section. The bow head is decorated with a low-relief central vertical rectangular cell which tapers down the bow. Either side of this cell, on the bow head, there is a pair of linear grooves. The majority of the bow is undecorated. The bow tapers to a blunt point. The catchplate on the reverse of the bow is missing. The surface of the brooch has traces of a well developed grey/green patina, otherwise the surface is abraded. It measures 37.5mm long, 15mm wide across the wings and weighs 5.4g. The brooch is a Polden Hill type, which probably dates to c. 75 to 175 AD (Worrell, S. 2007 'Roman Brooch Timeline' North-West PAS Newsletter). Bayley and Butcher (Bayley and Butcher, 2004 Roman Brooches in Britain: A technological and Typological Study Based on the Richborough Collection Society of Antiquaries p. 160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands.
