Cast copper alloy sword belt bar and hook with openwork foliate decoration and evidence of lacquering on all faces of both parts. The bar has a curvilinear snake-like design within a square border on each side plate, and between these a central motif which looks like a face, but is too corroded to make out. The hook plate also has an obscure motif on a roundel at its base. This plate still holds the ends of the two rivets which would have attached to the leather strap, or baldric. The bar has two rivet holes which would have been used to attach it to the belt. The style of the piece looks 17th century in date. Bailey (1993) illustrates similar examples of belt bars and plates on page 47, Nos.5 & 8. Read (2001) illustrates similar styles on mounts on pages 36 & 42, Figs.21 & 25, Nos.319 & 357-58, which are dated to the 17th century. The measurements below are for the composite piece.
