Roman copper alloy brooch, probably of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 5, flat wing ends type, Western Group). 1st or 2nd century AD date The brooch is fragmentary, represented by the head and upper bow only (with a surviving length of 18.5mm and a weight of 3.6g). The brooch employed a spring mechanism secured within end lugs and the chord was tensioned above the head with a claw, similar to Polden Hill type brooches. The wings are angled slightly to the rear (with a width of 19.0mm) and were decorated with vertical grooves. There was a V-shaped groove at the head around the claw. The bow is of low D-shaped section (2.3mm thick) and has straight sides, which converge towards the break (with a width at the head of 9.1mm and a width at the break of 5.4mm). There is the suggestion of grooves running along the sides of the bow but the decoration has been lost. The brooch green grey surface patina.
