SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: NARC-DB2175

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper-alloy seal matrix of late medieval date. The seal matrix is quite crude, has a circular face and a hexagonal faceted handle with a suspension loop. Below the lozenge shaped suspension loop is a collar. The face has a central device consisting of a central letter I which is crowned and has foliage to either side. A similar example is recorded on the PAS database (SF-CA62F1). Such matrices with a single crowned letter appear to have been common during the 14th to 15th centuries and this example is therefore likely to be of this date.
