An incomplete cast copper alloy Trumpet brooch of Roman date. The head, bow, acanthus moulding catchplate and foot all survive, but the pin mechanism and pin no longer remain. From the reverse of the head the loop which would have held the pin mechanism can be seen. The head is wide and trumpet shaped and is undecorated, terminating at a single collar. Below the collar is an acanthus decoration followed by a second collar. Extending down from the lower collar is the slightly bent lower bow which terminates in a circular foot. The lower bow has a triangular section and is undecorated. From the reverse of the lower bow the remains of the catchplate are present. The metal is a light greenish-brown colour and survives in good condition. The brooch is 43.1mm long, 13.7mm wide and weighs 7.3g. Brooches of this type date from between 75-175 AD. Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt, p.326, fig.185.
