Flat annular silver ring, inscribed on one side in lower case italic: 'Allinghtie neve wie' and on the reverse 'In Kent'. Efforts to precisely decipher this phrase have failed, but it is worth mentioning that hawking vervels often are inscribed with the name of a person or family, and their location. Here, the word 'neve' could be a reference to a person from a family by the name of Neve or Le Neve, living in Kent.[1] It seems less likely that 'Allinghtie' is a reference to a person - it may possibly be an alternate rendition of the word 'Almighty' such as is found in a letter of 1582 from the English writer John Lyly (c.1553 - 1606) to Lord Burghley.[2]

The italic inscription points to a late 16th C-17th C dating and are of a type mentioned in contemporary English hawking treatises: see examples in the British Museum, P&E 1856,0827.109 and similar examples are reported through the Treasure Act: compare TAR 2005-6 no. 847 in which the owner can be identified. As such, the vervel is likely to date to the early 17th Century. Due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
