HOOKED TAG

Unique ID: BH-B81BF5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper-alloy hooked tag of probable early post-Medieval date. The upper part of the artefact consists of two plates which have been joined to create a hollow body of semi-circular section. The upper plate has a curved central portion and a flattened and grooved band down each vertical side. It tapers in width towards the bottom. The surface is decorated with a panel of cross-hatched black lines, possibly executed in niello. The plain back plate is flat and there is a rectangular hole, located one third of the way down, which would have served as a means of attachment. The hook is backward-facing, the sharp point being only a few millimetres from the back plate. The artefact measures 33.8mm long, 14.6mm wide and 10.4mm thick. It weighs 6.76g. Parallels for this artefact are illustrated by Read (2008: 54, nos. 168-171). The suggested date range is c. 1500-c. 1650.
