Cast copper alloy fitting of probable later Iron Age or Roman date (300 BC – 300 AD). The fitting is incomplete and irregular in form broadly it is sub-rectangular in plan with a rounded terminal at one end and expanded one at the other (probably best described as a T shape). In cross section it is sub-rectangular or rectangular with rounded corners – the sides have distinct faceted edges. Where the fitting expands a sub-rectangular headed bar pierces the centre of the artefact. On the front face this is raised slightly above the surface of the metalwork, on the rear face this bar extends and a large area of iron corrosion is present. Above this iron fitting is a small horizontal cast par which is broken at each end. It is possible that this represents a broken loop. The rounded terminal of the fitting has a circular shaped copper alloy stud extend from the base of the rear; this has a socket within it (with an exterior diameter of 6.5mm and internal diameter of 2.2mm). There is no decoration on either face of the artefact. The artefact is a mid blackish grey green colour with a much abraded and corroded patina. A direct parallel for this artefact has not been found, in some way it is similar in shape to that of the bulls headed bucket mounts of iron age or roman date, although in this case it clearly is not one of these (unless very debased). It is however possible that this is some form of vessel fitting, possibly a tankard or vessel escutcheon for a handle (which would have fitted through the broken loop). The unusual socket like fitting at the base is also very unusual and currently unparalleled. It is possible, although unlikely, that this artefact may be much later in date, however all the indicators, metal patina etc would suggest a Roman or Iron Age date. The artefact measures 58.4mm length, is 26.8mm width across head, 11.3mm thick across lower terminal (6.1mm thick across body of the artefact). It weighs 24.95 grams.
