Middle/ Late Early-Medieval (Anglo Saxon : 800-900) zoomorphic strap-end of Thomas' Class A2 (Patterned), measuring 33.81mm in length and weighing 2.29g. It is max.8.21mm wide (at the centre) and min.4.30mm wide (at the snout), and max.3.66mm thick (at the open end). The narrow end of the strap-end is a square-ish snout which is waisted behind with a triangular hollow either side for the eyes. Behind the brow ridge is a sub-triangular area with two V-grooves, filled with a white substance. Above these are two roundish ears with an inverted V-groove inside. Behind the head is an area bound by a longitudinal groove flanking the long outside edges, and the area between groove and edge filled with tiny horizontal lines. Between the lines themselves is a central area divided by a +, comprising a pair of grooves crossing and the area between the pair of lines filled with tiny horizontal grooves. This creates four quarters filled with a white substance and at their centre a raised S or backwards S. At the top end of the + is a V-shape, again made of a pair of grooves (but no line decoration between). Above are two in situ iron rivets. The reverse of the strap-end is undecorated. Thomas (2003, p.2) comments that Type 2 strap-ends dominate the cheaper end of the strap-end market, and encompass a range of non-representational curvilinear and geometric patterns. They probably extend a little either side of the 9th century.
