A complete cast copper alloy socketed gouge. The gouge (used as a wood-working tool) is sub-rectangular in plan, with an oval cross sectioned and slightly flared socketed. The cutting edge is 'C' shaped in section with an elongated triangular or 'V' shaped groove leading back from it on the upper surface of the gouge. This groove (length: 75 mm) terminates 16 mm from the open socket and gradually tapers towards it. The mouth of the socket has a flat topped rim with a ridge around the outside. There is also a low ridge around the body of the gouge below this, forming a slight collar. There are casting lines visible along each side of the gouge. The socket still contains soil and could retain taces of mineralised material from the haft.
