TOKEN

Unique ID: SUSS-94CBA8

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Post Medieval cast lead double faced circular token. The token has a raised design of a horse or dog going left on one side, traces of something above the back may indicate it is a horse and rider. On the reverse are the raised initials IC with a cross bar on the I and below the date 1781. It is 25.7mm in diameter, 1.6mm thick and weighs 5.22 grams. Lead tokens are often made at home or locally for a wide range of uses they are therefore hard to date precisely. In consequence dated examples such as this are even more important in helping to establish a chronology for other examples. This example comes from a site which has produced numerous other tokens and lead artefacts, possibly a token production or collection site, and it may suggest a late 18th century date for the activity in general although this is hard to prove from one example. The horse was the badge of the Hanovorian kings who rule Britain from 1714 to 1837.
