Object type certainty: Probably

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type),Mackreth 2011, 4.h. Plate 47, no. 6248. The wings are missing, and this is not recent damage. The axis bar, spring and pin are also all missing. In the centre of the upper edge of the wings there is a fragment of an integral hook which would have supported the spring chord. The reverse of the bow head is hollow which is filled with a hard black ?ceramic substance. The bowhead is hump-like in profile, semi-circular in section as it tapers to form the bow and on each side of the head there are is a semi-circular moulding which is a characteristic feature of this brooch type. The reverse of the bow has a vertical ridge which widens to form the catchplate which is incomplete. The bow head and bow are decorated with a central vertical ridge with a column of ring and dots either side. The bow tapers to a circular sectioned foot. The surface of the brooch has traces of a mottled patina. It measures 51.46mm long, 11.66mm wide across the bow head and weighs 12.9g. The brooch is probably a Polden Hill type, which probably dates to c. 75 to 175 AD (Worrell, S. 2007 'Roman Brooch Timeline' North-West PAS Newsletter). Bayley and Butcher (Bayley and Butcher, 2004 Roman Brooches in Britain: A technological and Typological Study Based on the Richborough Collection Society of Antiquaries p. 160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands.
