A neck from a composite prick spur of late Saxon date in the form of an animal with tendrils scrolling back from its pointed nose. The animal has projecting eyes and the ears project out at right angles. The terminal is hollow to take the rounded heel of the spur (which was presumably of iron). An iron rod, the goad, runs through the length and projects out at the mouth.
Notes:
Late Saxon (Anglo-Scandinavian) prick spurs are uncommon. The few surviving examples are of similar form and construction.
