A sherd from an 18th century flared bowl. The fabric is hard with a slightly sandy temper and white polycrystaline inclusions that indicates the source is probably the Nettlebed area (Maureen Mellor pers comm.). The fabric is fired to a reddish-orange, covered internally with a thin white slip under a clear glaze with splashes of copper to give the green colouring. This style of bowl was made with or without handles and those with everted rims such as this example are often termed stool bowls, indicating a possible function. However they were also used in the serving of food.
Notes:
The date of this vessel is contemporary with the front part of the building of what is now The Vine and Spice restaurant, formerly The Vine public house. This sherd was found during renovation works beneath the floor. More information about the building can be found in the Oxfordshire HER (reference PRN 12873).
