A cast copper alloy ring of unknown date, most probably Iron Age or early Roman (300 BC- 100AD). The function of the ring is debatable, but is probably either a belt ring or harness ring. The ring is circular in plan and has a distinct angular sub-triangular cross section; the section has its thickest part on the outer edge of the ring and is narrowest at the centre. The upper and lower surfaces have distinct faceted edges. There is no evidence of either cast or applied decoration and all casting residue has been removed from the surface of the ring. The internal edge of the ring is worn in two distinct places – opposite one another. This differential wear suggests that the artefact has been used for a specific task, such as conjoining two moving straps. The ring has a well preserved thick patina which is a mid greenish brown colour. A direct parallel has not been found, similar rings can be found in both the Camerton excavation report and also the Morrell Collection. In these excavated examples the function is unknown – however the dating suggests a la Tène I or II date (Morrell) or Late Iron Age – Roman Transition (Camerton). It seems highly likely that these rings are functional either for personal or harness related functions. The ring measures 31.6mm diameter, is 6.3mm wide and 7.4mm thick, it has and internal diameter of 18.4mm and weighs 16.01 grams.
