Cast copper alloy fantail Roman brooch dating to the second half of the 2nd century AD. It is a hinged example but the pin and mechanism are missing. The pin attached to a bar which was help between two loops on the reverse of the head. The headloop is broken but is cast integrally to the brooch. Below this the head has two short, rectangular wings with vertical grooves (on some examples this is stepping). The upper bow is curved and has a square cross-section. It leads to a fan shaped tail which is enamelled. The edges of the fantail are missing. The enamel consists of a central narrow triangle of red above two shorter, wider triangles of yellow/white. There may have been more originally but this is all that remains. The catchplate is behind the fantail and has broken so that only the part immediately attached to the brooch remains. The brooch is corroded all over with vayring patches of green and brown.
