Incomplete Early Early-Medieval (Anglo Saxon) copper alloy Small-Long brooch with damaged edges and missing its pin and catchplate. It measures 41.35mm in length and weighs 5.59g. The rectangular head-plate measures 14.84x12.25x1.62mm and is apparently plain (although the edges have lot much of their original patina). The short, highly arched bow is 9.08mm in length, 6.10mm wide and max.4.83mm thick at the centre. The surface is pitted and much patina is lost, although the sides do appear slightly faceted. The foot is expanded with lateral lobes forming a lozenge-shaped field, 15.01mm wide and 1.86mm thick. It tapers to the crescentic terminal, 11.58x7.69x1.09mm. To the reverse of the foot is a square patch of solder, presumably for the missing catchplate. MacGregor and Bollick (1993) comment that normally worn in pairs, the Small-Long brooch is the most modest representative of the Anglo Saxon 'Safety pin brooch' variety. Their distribution extends from East Anglia to Gloucestershire with outliers as far north as Northumberland. They appear early in the 5th century and extend well into the 6th. Cf.MacGregor & Bollick, 1993, p.126, nos. 15.4, 15.5, 15.6.
