Early Medieval penny of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), Expanding Cross type, Heavy Issue, minted by Goldwine at Winchcombe, 1052-3 AD, North 823
Notes:
Martin Allen commented: The mint signature 'PINC' could also refer to Winchester, but it has been established that the moneyer Goldwine worked at Winchcombe only, from the Small Flan type of Edward the Confessor to the Paxs type of William I/II. This is a relatively rare mint: a hoard from Appledore which contained 497 coins of Edward the Confessor's Expanding Cross type (the type of your coin) had no coins of Winchcombe. Photograph supplied by finder, coin not seen.
