A small medieval circular heraldic roundel made from gilded silver. At the centre is a shield engraved with three lions' heads, their tongues poking out, facing left, separated by a chevron. The background is chased to receive enamel, which would have provided the correct colour values for the interpretation of the heraldry. The shield in turn is set within a trefoil, the inside of which is also worked to receive enamel. The back is entirely plain and there is no apparent means of attachment. The roundel is likely to have been set into a box, a belt-fitting, a cup or a bowl.
The roundel dates from the late fourteenth or the fifteenth century. The arms are those of Dudley, of Clapton, Northamptonshire (the baronetcy died out in 1764).
