A Roman copper alloy fragment of a bracelet or incomplete finger ring dating to the late 3rd – 4th century. Both ends of this fragment are broken; the remaining section is a flat strip of copper alloy with the outer surface decoration; its original shape has been distorted. The outer surface is decorated with a row of punched dots roughly aligned along the mid-line and triangular notches along both edges. The notches are roughly aligned either side of each punched dot. A bracelet with similar decorated in illustrated in Crummy (1995:42 no. 1704) and Crummy notes that this style of bracelets/armlets dates to the late 3rd – 4th century. Crummy (1995:41) describes this pattern as ‘wave-crest decoration’ and states that it is linked to the continuous wave of notched shale and jet. Later on Crummy (1995:45) states that the designs on finger-rings are similar to those on the bracelets/armlets. Sometimes finger rings are made from cut-down sections of the bracelets/armlets. Dimensions: length: 33.03mm; width: 3.12mm; thickness: 1.26mm; weight: 0.77g. Reference: Crummy, N. 1995. The Roman small finds from excavations in Colchester 1971-1979.
