Report on post-medieval silver hawking vervel of Lewis and Richardson type C.i, from 'Worfield Area', Shropshire (2009 T508)
Small silver vervel of D- ring form, comprising a flat silver ring inscribed with name IOHN TALBOT and with a shield soldered to the front with a hound or talbot passant. Though not figuring on the shield of the Talbots, the dog of that name was used as a crest and/or supporter by various branches of the family at different times.
The vervel may have been owned by Sir John Talbot, 10th Earl of Shrewsbury (1601-54), which would suit the design and type of the vervel and its lettering. Compare other silver talbot-bearing objects recorded on the PAS database: a seal matrix, YORYM-7DBF82 (2013T246) and a medieval livery badge, WAW-48AAB3 (2007T583).
Compare for form and dating three vervels reported through the Treasure Act, 2006T231, 2005T257, 2005T302. In each case the owner can be identified.
As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
