Roman copper alloy nummus of Eugenius (AD 392-4), [VICTORIA AVGGG or SPES ROMANORVM], Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm. Mint unclear. (LRBC p. 48, c.f. 171-2 for possible type) .
Notes:
This is a rare coin Eugenius (392-4) was a pagan rhetorician (hence his beard) who worked in the western imperial bureaucracy. He was made emperor by the barbarian general Arbogast in a challenge to Theodosius I (379-95). He was executed after his defeat at the Battle of the River Frigidus by Theodosius. His silver coins tend to be found more often than bronze ones. This is probably because the bronze pieces are small and often poorly struck or worn.(Moorhead,S. pers comm.)
This has been noted as an interesting find by the recorder.
