AXEHEAD

Unique ID: SUSS-FBDF27

Object type certainty: Certain

Incomplete Mid-Late Neolithic (2900-2100BC) chipped and polished flint axehead. The pointed butt end of the axe is complete but the blade is missing; the general shape and size suggests at least half of the original length remains. The axehead is pointed oval in section, 118mm long, 60mm wide and 36mm thick; it was not possible to weigh it as it was greater than 60 grams, the maximum the scales available could measure. The butt is rounded but narrow; the sides are curved and widen and thicken from the butt, stongly at first but begining to flatten out towards the break. Both sides of the axe are polished over their entire surface to a high sheen with some later large flake removals around the edge due to damage. However even in the highly polished areas some deeper flake scars remain from the initial shaping. The break towards the blade is irregular.
